Colorado’s high country is tough on exterior paint. The UV exposure at altitude, freeze-thaw cycles, and heavy snow load all accelerate wear in ways that flat-land homeowners never deal with.
Here’s what to look for:
1. Chalking or Fading
If you run your hand along the siding and come away with white powder, your paint is oxidizing. This is normal over time but means you’re losing protection.
2. Peeling or Bubbling
This usually means moisture is getting behind the paint film — a serious problem in mountain homes where snow piles against siding all winter.
3. Cracking or Flaking
When paint loses flexibility from UV damage, it cracks. Once it starts flaking, you’re exposing bare wood to the elements.
4. Visible Wood or Primer
If you can see wood grain or primer through the paint, you’ve already waited too long.
5. It’s Been More Than 5-7 Years
At altitude, high-quality exterior paint typically lasts 5-7 years — less on south and west-facing surfaces that take the most sun.
