Humidity swings break solid hardwood
Seasonal humidity here swings from 15% to 45% RH, more than most floors are designed for. Cupping, gapping, and squeaking are the classic mountain hardwood problems, and they almost always trace back to acclimation or subfloor moisture.
Engineered is often the smarter pick
Real wood top layer, plywood-like core that handles humidity swings far better than solid. Same look, far fewer surprises three winters in. We install both and tell you which makes sense for your room before you commit.
What we install
Solid hardwood (oak, hickory, walnut, maple), engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and tile (LVP/LVT), laminate, and bamboo. Heated subfloor systems get prepped before any flooring goes down.
Mudrooms and entryways
Ski boots, hiking boots, dog paws, tracked-in snow and grit. Tile or commercial-grade LVP at the entry, transitioning to wood or carpet beyond. Carpet at the front door is a one-year solution at best.
Subfloor prep matters more than the floor
A flat, dry, properly fastened subfloor is what makes flooring last. We level uneven subfloors, address moisture before it shows through, and verify subfloor moisture content with a meter, not by eyeballing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What flooring works best at mountain altitude?
Engineered hardwood and luxury vinyl handle mountain humidity swings better than solid hardwood, and they're often the right call in second homes that sit empty between visits. Solid hardwood works fine in primary residences with stable indoor climate. We'll match the product to your home and use case.
Do you handle subfloor prep, or do I need that done separately?
Subfloor prep is included. A flat, dry, properly fastened subfloor is what makes flooring last. We level uneven subfloors, address moisture before it shows through, and verify subfloor moisture content with a meter, not by eyeballing.
Can you install new flooring over the existing floor?
Sometimes. Floating LVP or laminate can go over many existing surfaces. Hardwood and tile usually require removal of the old floor down to the subfloor. We'll inspect and recommend the right approach during the estimate.
How do you acclimate hardwood in dry mountain air?
Hardwood needs to acclimate to the home's interior climate before installation, usually 5-7 days in the actual rooms where it's going. Skipping this step is the #1 cause of warped or gapped floors at altitude.
Can you install heated floors?
Yes. Electric radiant heat under tile is common in mountain bathrooms and mudrooms, and we coordinate the heating mat install with the tile work so it's all one trade. Hydronic heated floors are a larger project, usually part of a remodel or new construction.
Replacing or starting fresh?
